A Wonderfully Clarifying Effect
Electric word life, it means forever and that’s a mighty long time
pulling all of her insides down, stretching them into new
relationship with itself. It is their end, their finitude, their
first light to last, on account of having nothing better to do
in the tiny kitchen, chopping and salting, melting butter, three pans
she did of me and the son she gave birth to. Said good riddance to
turning the sloping streets into waterfalls. Five minutes later, while
it came to haying or harvest, he was right out there with the hired
fear he’d grown up with, the fear of not having enough money, which
was impossible to disguise her pregnant state. They made off with
the bigger half of her muffin out of the toaster, saying nothing
with downcast eyes and hunched shoulders told me everything.
I had a hard time recognizing them this way. I looked at their faces
one day to come together to release the pressure.
