Our Heedless Rapacity
In the hiss of the wind I think I hear a whispered voice and
Captain Ahab wasn’t so ridiculous, after all. Press coverage!
The little cares, fears, tears, timid misgivings, sleepless fancies of
everyone but me can trip and fall into comfortable relationships
from the time they all went crashing out onto the sidewalk until
a burst of ridicule fit to have brought the old tower down
trying to piece a thousand pages of data into some kind of story
went around behind the desk and gestured toward the wing chair,
agitated with these doubts and perplexities that the incident occurred
empty with every sip, as if trying to figure out what’s happening to it.
Who flings good money after bad and a good life after vile weak sins?
These forebodings and this uncomfortable train of thought
catches my eye and holds it there; silver, gold, purple, blue.
