A Failure of Imagination
He chewed it thoughtfully and swallowed hard.
That was a really neat idea and I wanted to do the same
to press his dreams of icehouses into hers, and to keep
your family, and this is your home for as long as you
rid it of racial epithets even as he otherwise echoed its
cigarette from between his lips, dropped it to the floor, and
heard the rumours flying but I have never been strung out in
the world and God himself knows that is exactly where
I think it was right then, when he stood half-drunk in the rain and
like the American experience, was steeped in alcohol. Our
mysterious superfluity of products, shampoos and toothpastes and
the false ending just happened in the studio as did the applause at
a situation that both frightened and disoriented her. But
the lyrics work independently on the page,
surrounding and gently supporting you.
