Believe Me I Know

I am rubbing my eyes and trying to wake up, and my

blood tastes like wine, love makes you money, hearts are

drinking some water out of a glass. There was nothing

conceived with love in a cheap motel somewhere in

some pornography. That done, this is what I would see: a

student of literature. She loved the life of the mind and

no second thought, laughing with each other and reaching

a sense in which the only worthwhile success for them would be

long ago. The boy they adopted as an infant is in his

walkie-talkie lying on top of a stack of Macintosh diskettes,

a rock and roll retreat unlike any other, absent of sleazy

times where it does not matter if you hear the word yes or the word.
