Such Lovely Sobriquets

Normally this beach is deserted white, sandy expanse, but

I didn't think anyone could make that kind of money these days

making sure that their secret and sacred paraphernalia was hidden

with a warmth of anticipation little dimmed by the passage of time

that clung to the trunks of the paperback trees and the tall river gums

had been given the substance of truth and it was made more tangible

to watch out for them and now the three girls had finally seen one

to have shrunk in scale. The whole plant, like the object of an old

pain as they climbed into their cosy shelter that night amongst the

aisle, but now it seemed somehow deceptive, concealing a

place and sleeping in the same bed every night on a mattress

across the market grounds, stopping long enough to finger a

question at the irritating imperturbability of her face--

how a delirious, starving trapper set on by timber wolves ate.
